2 on 1 Drills

Time-Tested Drills Utilized by Players Across Generations to Enhance Accuracy and Ball Control

Key Points

  • 6 to 8 minutes of 2 v 1’s with the player on his own getting worked around while focusing on mixing up spins and speed etc.
  • The advantage of being the player on their own is you can hit the ball anywhere you want
  • Try not to hit more than 2 in a row to the same person
  • 2v1 with the player on his own continuing until he misses 5 shots
  • The 2 players on their own can’t hit a winner
  • Work on hitting as many balls as possible without making an error
  • Drill 3 - 2v1 with the 2 players hitting every shot down the line and the player on his own hitting crosscourt
  • Once you get tired, rotate around so everyone has time on their own
  • Mix up the intensity of the drill based on your level of play
  • Drill 4 - 2v1 with the 2 players going crosscourt and the player on his own going down the line
  • 2v1 with 1 player at the net and 2 at the baseline
  • The player at the net should work on moving his volleys around
  • “Volleys are 50% with your feet - getting in position and moving”
  • “You’ll miss 10,000 volleys before you become a good volleyer”
  • 2v1 with 1 player at the net and the 2 players at the baseline
  • The 2 players at the baseline should hit a lob followed by a low volley to the player at the net, moving them forward and back
  • Quick turn “karaoke step” when jumping for the smash, working on keeping the ball in front of you
  • Snap your wrist at the top so your racket face is in front of your hands and wrist when you make contact
  • 2v1 with all 3 players starting at the baseline
  • The 2 players hit 3 or 4 shots before hitting a short ball that the player on their own hits as an approach shot and comes into the net to play the point out
  • When approaching the net, split step and stay low, eye level with the ball
  • 2v1 with 2 players at the net moving the player on the baseline around
  • Work on “dipping” the ball and using different angles and ball speeds
  • The coach should feed the ball in with all players rotating twice
