Carlos Santos Bosque was Carlos Alcaraz’s first coach, working with him daily from age 5 to 12 and shaping the foundations of the game that would make him a future Grand Slam champion. From the very beginning, Santos coached with the end in sight — developing an all-court style built on variety, touch, net aggression, and creative shot-making, all underpinned by elite footwork, anticipation, and mental resilience.Over eight years, he trained Alcaraz in every facet of the sport: building a forehand and backhand with natural feel and explosive rotation, mastering the drop shot as a daily weapon, learning to disguise slice and change rhythms, returning aggressively, constructing points with patience, and enduring long rallies through physical and mental “suffering.” He also created countless situational drills to prepare for pressure — from match-point scenarios to high-stakes tiebreakers — instilling a mindset to play fearlessly no matter the score.Equally important, Santos fostered an environment of trust, joy, and freedom. He let Alcaraz’s creativity flourish, kept training engaging with competitive games, and balanced discipline with autonomy as Carlos’s talent and personality grew. The result was a player who loved the game, thrived under pressure, and could win in any style — short bursts of aggression or 20-ball rallies.Today, Carlos Santos lives in Murcia, Spain, where he is also a physiotherapist and continues to coach top Spanish juniors. His CoachLife videos show exactly how he built Alcaraz’s foundation — a blueprint of drills, skills, and philosophy that continues to produce the next generation of champions.
