Essential Serving Fundamentals From Taylor Fritz's Coach
"Coiling "The Legs, The Hips, The Trunk and The Shoulders, Before “Uncoiling” Everything on the Snap of the Wrist
Key Points
- Feet shoulder width apart
- Left foot pointing to the netpost at a 45 degree angle
- Lean forward and then rock back
- The angle of the tossing arm should be in line with the left foot, releasing the ball at eye level
- Hit the slice serve at 1 o’clock
- Serve down the tee 60 to 70% of the time
- Turn and “coil” the legs, the hips, the trunk and the shoulders, before “uncoiling” everything on the snap of the wrist
- A common mistake on the pinpoint serve can be to bring the back foot next to the front foot, causing you to lose power and risk injury
- The serve is the same motion as throwing a football
- Keep a nice and relaxed wrist and forearm
- Focus on one continuous motion with the swing
- Hit the ball as high as possible, with your weight behind the ball
- The momentum of your swing will take you into the court
- On the deuce side, hit 60% of serves down the tee, 20% in the body and 20% out wide
