Unique Serve Philosophy
Why There Are No First and Second Serves: Mastering Flat, Spin, and Kick Varieties with a Consistent Ball Toss for Effective Disguise
Key Points
- Drive the shoulder up into the ball
- Ball toss should be exactly the same for every serve
- Feet a comfortable distance apart so you’re well balanced, looking down the court to get a picture of where you will serve
- Look up before you throw the ball up, so you can toss the ball into the path of the swing
- Practice hitting with your eyes closed to see if your toss is straight and fits in with the natural rhythm of your swing
- Draw the shoulder back to gain more power, so the front shoulder is higher
- Power comes from driving the back leg up and accelerating through contact
- Hit around the outside of the ball for the slice, at around 3 o’clock
- The ball toss stays the same, with the position of the body changing under the ball
- Change the body position to hit up the back of the ball with the ball toss a little lower
- Use your legs to help kick up the back of the ball
- The kick serve gives you more time to get closer to the net, making it harder to hit a passing shot
- There are no first & second serves, just slice, flat and hard with different variations of pace & spin
