Ball Toss Correction & Explosive Leg Power on The Serve
Learn to Stabilise Your Swing and Develop Strength and Power in Your Ankles and Legs
Key Points
- Don’t toss the ball too far behind the head and try not to land on your left side
- Try and jump with a straight leg and then land on a bent leg
- These exercises can improve your "body balance" and stabilize the swing, while strengthening your ankles and legs
- Serving Progressions:
- Several jumps with a straight back leg landing on the box
- Jump onto the box moving the arms like a serve but not releasing the ball
- Toss the ball and catch while jumping onto the box
- After years of this drill, and once you are very comfortable with the first 3 progressions, serve while jumping onto the box
- Stepping inside the 2 yellow lines helps eliminate the mistake of moving your back foot into the wrong position on the pinpoint serve
- The lines help you keep the toss in the right place
- Keep the back straight after the serve
- Split step immediately after serving and be ready to play with a wide base
- Quick drop feed after the serve to practice “serve plus 1”
- Once your player has the correct technique on the serve and can hit all the spots, start to incorporate “serve plus 1 and serve plus 2”
- Iga’s training session’s included 25% of serve plus 1 or serve plus 2 drills
