Serve Target & Toss Drill From Djokovic’s Junior Coach
Improve serve accuracy with a 3-cone drill. Hit T, body & wide targets with consistent tosses. Hold the ball longer—don’t flick or rush—to avoid errors.
Key Points
- Follow-Up Tactic:
Wide serve should be followed by hitting into the open court for an easy +1 opportunity. - Importance of the Serve:
Serve is one of the most crucial shots in tennis. This drill is recommended for all players and should be practiced daily. - Cone Target Setup (3 Serve Zones):
Down the T (Middle): Cone placed near the center line to simulate the serve up the middle.Body Serve: Cone placed in line with where an opponent would typically stand, simulating a serve into the body.Wide Serve: Cone placed slightly inside the sideline to encourage pulling the opponent off the court for a follow-up shot into open space. - Ball Toss Technique:
Gentle toss is essential — keep the ball in your hand slightly longer before releasing.Ideal toss position is around 1 o’clock for right-handers.Avoid flicking or rushing the toss; early or incorrect release causes directional errors (left or right). - Consistency of Toss Placement:
Toss should be in the same spot for all serve directions (T, body, wide) to avoid telegraphing serve location to the opponent. - Technical Serving Tips:
Close the racket head slightly for control and spin.Follow through over the left leg.Keep the left arm up a bit longer during the motion for better balance and timing.
