Slice Serve, Topspin Serve and Kick Serve
Snapping the Wrist Before Contact on the Slice, "Turning the Handle" on the Kick Serve and Using the Kicker as a First Serve
Key Points
- Hit the slice serve at 1 o'clock, coming around the outside of the ball
- Toss the ball a little further to the right, being careful not give away the direction of your serve
- The slice serve pulls your opponent out wide, opens up the court and allows you to get that “one-two punch”
- Stay side on as long as you can
- Feel like you’re “peeling the ball” and “taking some of that felt off”
- Snap the wrist right before you make contact to generate more slice and “get the ball to move”
- Throw the ball toss up so if it dropped it would hit you on the visor
- For the topspin serve, make contact closer to 6 o’clock, hitting under the ball and snapping up
- Hit the ball just before full extension, aiming as high as you can
- The key on the topspin serve is to get the ball to bounce over your opponent’s shoulder where they can't hurt you and you can take control of the point
- Use the Topspin or kick serve as a first serve to mix it up
- Make contact with the kick serve closer to 7 o’clock
- As you’re hitting up through the ball, snap your wrist like you are turning a handle
- To have a great second serve, you want the ball moving up and away from your opponent
- Use the kick serve to serve and volley
- When driving up to contact, aim to hit about 20% of the ball and “grab that felt and rip it off”
