Forehand Stance & Technique | Diego Moyano’s Key Tips

Learn how to load the back leg, control elbow position based on grip, and master open, closed, and semi-open forehand stances with Diego Moyano's expert advice.

Key Points

  • Push the ground using a “back leg load” and a nice turn with the hips going first
  • Racket head above the hand with some separation between the arm and the body
  • If the non-dominant hand is released too early, you have the problem of being too front on and the racket “getting lost on the backswing”
  • The elbow is closer to the body with the western grip and further away with the eastern and semi western
  • The closed stance makes it difficult to handle balls coming with a lot of pace
  • When you have time, the closed stance with the front foot forward helps with a natural transfer of the weight
  • Semi open stance helps players with western grips release the hips more
  • Stay side on a little longer for the semi open stance
  • Drive the hip through, while getting that nice acceleration with the arm and wrist across the body
  • “Open stance” - The outside foot has to be parallel to the line with a loose wrist and the trunk aligned with your body
  • As you hit, the outside foot should turn from parallel to the line to perpendicular to the line to help you push back and recover to the middle
  • If you have a little more time on the open stance, your hip should follow your swing and “snap” towards the direction of the ball
