How to Return a Wide Slice Serve

Master wide slice serve returns using the buggy whip forehand. Learn to adjust contact point, trajectory, and recovery to neutralize tough serves effectively.

Key Points

  • The intention of your shot changes based on your return position
  • If the serve doesn’t pull you too far out of court you can step and turn on contact
  • You should generally aim for the centre of the court on the return
  • Try and use the buggy whip/right side finish on the wide return and aim for a higher trajectory over the net to give you time to recover
  • Accelerate right before you hit the ball on the wide return, similar to a fast topspin lob
  • The buggy whip or reverse forehand is one the most important shots in tennis and has been taught by 2 other coaches on Coachlife - Robert Lansdorp and Michael Joyce
