How to Build a Clean Backhand | Pro Drills & Wrist Trick
Train a clean, consistent backhand with drills used by Kyrgios’s junior coach. Learn wrist control, stances, weight transfer, and match-like recovery habits.
Key Points
- Clean take back above the waist with a lift, unit turn and no twists
- Keep the arm relaxed and slightly bent with a nice racket drop
- Engage the left through contact and extend out through the ball
- Get your weight on the left leg to position yourself behind the ball
- Step through and transfer the weight from left to right as you extend out through the ball
- Consistently practice all the stances including open, closed and semi-open
- Consider using a wheat bag on the hands and grip to stop from opening or closing the racket too much on the take back
- Keep the racket level on the backswing and the shoulders and arms relaxed
- Contact the ball out in front and extend the arms on the follow through
- Open stance backhand followed by step down backhand
- Recover after each shot, stay on your toes and try and simulate match conditions
