You Need 2 Weapons
Stan’s Core Philosophies: Ball Control, Ball Speed and Being Great Out of the Corners
Key Points
- You need 2 weapons to be a great player, which should ideally be your forehand and serve
- Have your coach stand behind you and call what serve you are going to hit after you throw the ball up
- Practice the ‘Swedish drill’ where you play points and you can’t hit a winner
- You have to have great defense and play well out of the corners
- Tennis is a recognition sport and you need to learn how to read the ball and move
- Learn how to control the ball with drills that include 2 cross and 1 line or 3 cross and 1 line etc.
- Understand why you’re getting behind in a rally; is it because your opponent has better ball speed, or better ball control
- Think of a simple crosscourt forehand drill as practicing your running forehand and recover after each shot
- Use targets in drills and aim to hit them regularly to improve ball control
