Doubles Mastery: Proven Drills from a Legendary College Coach
Doubles Will Improve Your Singles Plus the Drills Used by 2 Grand Slam Champions
Key Points
- The poach is usually won off the second volley
- The players at the back should be using the middle of the court as much as possible
- The Majority of your poaches should be hit across the court and down the middle
- Hit your first volley deep and aim to put the second ball away
- Pinch Drill - Play first to 11 with all 4 players at the net and the coach feeding to the “attackers” who focus on closing the net and controlling their own box (Pinch) with no crossing
- Poach Drill - First to 11 points with 2 players at the baseline and 2 players at the net. The coach feeds to the players at the net who alternate “poaches” and play the point out
- Overhead and Poach Drill - 2 at the net and 2 at the baseline with the coach alternating feeds between a lob and then a normal feed for the player to poach
- 1 forward, 1 back drill - Start with 1 player at the baseline and 1 at the net on each side and play points out - The team poaching wins 2 points
- Transitions to the net drill - All 4 players start at the baseline, with the coach feeding a short ball and the 2 players have to approach the net and play the point out (move back to the baseline after each point)
