The Bunker: Simple “Pancake” and “V-Swing” Method for Softer, Controlled Shots
Hit 2–3 inches behind the ball on a pancake-shaped spot, use a short “V-swing” motion, and set up open with weight forward to pop bunker shots out softly and with control.
Key Points
- Goal: Improve consistency and confidence when hitting out of greenside bunkers using three simple techniques.
- 1. Draw the Pancake
Imagine a pancake shape in the sand under the ball.Your goal is to hit 2–3 inches behind the ball, using the sand as a cushion between the clubface and the ball.Avoid direct club-to-ball contact—you don’t want to hear a “thin” sound. - 2. Use a V-Swing Motion
Create a short, vertical swing using your wrists in a “V” shape.Focus on a choppy, up-and-down motion rather than a sweeping swing. This helps dig under the ball and lift it out softly. - 3. Setup: Open & Lean
Open the clubface slightly to increase bounce.Lean your weight slightly forward to promote a steeper angle of attack. - Bonus Tip:
When done correctly, this technique helps pop the ball up with control and can even lead to hole-outs from the bunker!
✅ Try the “pancake” and “V-swing” method next time you're in the sand to simplify your bunker play and save strokes.
