Rick Sessinghaus

Dr. Rick Sessinghaus is one of the most respected coaches in golf, and the world’s leading golf-specific sports psychologist. He has been Collin Morikawa’s coach since the age of eight, guiding him from a talented junior to a multiple major champion. Rick was Morikawa’s swing coach throughout his junior career and remains his current swing and mental game coach on the PGA Tour, traveling with him to events and helping him perform at the highest level. With a PhD in sports psychology, Rick blends technical mastery with mental performance training in a way few coaches can match.Rick’s coaching philosophy is built on a unique combination of technical expertise, body mechanics, and mental mastery. A former professional golfer himself, Rick understands the demands of competitive play. Over more than 30 years of coaching, he’s developed a holistic approach that adapts to each player’s physical capabilities, mindset, and goals. He was an early advocate for golf-specific fitness and incorporates body movement analysis into swing development. His doctorate research and decades of applied work in sports psychology have made him a pioneer in using flow state principles, breathing, visualization, and focus training to prepare players for peak performance under pressure.Rick’s work with Morikawa exemplifies his approach. From a young age, Morikawa’s training was 70% on the course, building decision-making skills, shot creativity, and composure. Rick helped him develop a fade pattern suited to his strengths, improve clubface control, and match equipment to his body changes over time. As his ongoing swing and mental coach, Rick has guided Morikawa through high-pressure moments, including his first major at the 2020 PGA Championship, where a fearless drive on 16 set up the eagle that sealed the win. Rick’s coaching emphasizes the mental game — managing emotions, breaking fear loops, building confidence, and creating consistent pre- and post-shot routines.Beyond the tour, Rick has coached many of the world’s top junior golfers and is a sought-after speaker and educator. His library of drills, course-management strategies, and mental game frameworks — from the Three Ball Drill to competition-based practice and visualization routines — helps players of all levels improve. Whether it’s teaching juniors to focus on long-term development, helping amateurs find flow, or preparing a tour pro for Sunday pressure, Rick’s goal remains the same: to blend the technical, physical, and mental elements into a complete performance system.
